Reflexology: More Than a Foot Massage!
When we hear the word "reflexology," the most popular image that comes to mind is that of a foot massage. In actuality, reflexology is a specialized and detail-oriented therapeutic treatment. When performed by a licensed therapist, reflexology is a safe modality for promoting health and overall well-being. This blog aims to educate and inform you about this unique service.
Reflexology is not a "fad" or a flash-in-the pan treatment. It is believed to have originated about 2,000 years ago, dating back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations. It is based on the principle that there is a map on our feet and hands, a map which corresponds to specific areas and organs in the human body. This holistic approach to wellness is what we seek to accomplish in all of the services we offer here at Spa Rockaway.
There are treatments advertising Reflexology which turn out to be just some extra attention to the feet. There is nothing wrong with this, but it does not address specific reflex areas. An actual reflex treatment involves using the thumbs and fingers to work the entire surface of the foot and hand. Reflexology is a protocol of manual techniques such as thumb and finger walking, hook and back up, and rotating on a point. These techniques stimulate the complex neural pathways, linking the systems supporting the body's efforts to function optimally.
During your session, we will mainly concentrate on the knees down, starting with a warm towel and an antibacterial blend of essential oils to prepare your feet. When the therapist feels congestion or the client reports sensations, that area is worked more specifically and with deeper pressure. Also, points will be worked on that correspond to individual organs or areas that are identified by the client as needing attention. For example, if you are experiencing pain and discomfort in your shoulder, that can be addressed by working on the area under your pinky toe. If your sinuses are aggravated due to allergies, we will work on the tips of your toes.
Point work stimulates the nervous system and supports the body's efforts to function well. At the end of your session, I like to end with some scalp and ear work so you feel extra refreshed.
We believe at Spa Rockaway that deep relaxation is where healing happens and reflexology facilitates deep relaxation, whether you choose to book it as an "Add-On" to your Signature Massage or as a standalone appointment. Additionally, this service is ideal for clients who have difficulty with mobility, as this service does not require the removal of clothing (as it does with traditional massage).
Spa Rockaway offers Reflexology for 30 minutes at $75 or 60 minutes at $125. Click here to book your next appointment!
